Outdoor Skills at Camp Live Oak
Your child will learn a slew of outdoor educational skills while attending Camp Live Oak — and it’ll actually be fun for your little one, too.
While discovering and uncovering all of the fascination the great outdoors has to offer, your child will learn vital skills concerning the following:
- Orienteering
- Medicinal Plants
- Primitive Cooking
- Wildlife Identification
Learning all of these outdoor skills will also allow your child to feel more connected to nature, and it’ll give him or her a sense of adventure.
Orienteering: Navigation Skills
Orienteering is a fun and competitive sport that combines racing and navigation skills to reach the finish line. To complete the course, your child will be given a detailed map that will let him or her know what sites to visit before finishing the race. The terrain around the course will be unfamiliar and diverse, so it will definitely be a challenge, but the map will give children all the details about the area. Not only will your little one learn vital navigation skills that will help later in life, but he or she will gain a sense of adventure from running freely. Don’t worry, though; the areas in which your child can run through will be properly monitored by our team of adults — at all times — we promise! Learn more
Medicinal Plants: Horticulture and Apothecary Skills, Combined
Before the day and age of there being a pill for just about any ailment, there were medicinal plants. Apothecaries were a real thing, and in the olden days, they sold herbs and medicinal plants — typically in raw form — and advised patients on how to overcome a sickness.
At Camp Live Oak, we believe in teaching youngsters a little bit about that vein of thinking. Your young one will learn all about the top medicinal plants, as well as how to use them to benefit the body or to overcome an ailment. This will also help them boost their wilderness survival skills.
Primitive Cooking: Survival Skills
Primitive cooking involves learning how to start a fire without a match and how to gather the materials to do it, like proper firewood. Your child will learn what materials works best for kindling, discover different methods of how to efficiently start a fire by using only what nature gives us, and how to deal with the wind when cooking. Children also learn how to cook food to the proper temperature and the differences between boiling, grilling and searing. Children also learn how to cook without modern utensils, such as pots, frying pans, and spatulas.
Wildlife Identification
In order to understand the world, you must go out and see it. And that’s what wildlife identification is all about — seeing wildlife in their natural habitats. Being able to tell which animal sounds match which animal is a very vital skill to have, especially when it comes to being outside for extended periods of time. Your child will learn about the wildlife primitive to Florida and Florida’s ecosystems. The exact wildlife your child will learn about will depend on the week he or she is registered for, so you might want to ask about our schedule first.
Nevertheless, your teen will have the chance to visit some of southern Florida’s most awesome habitats. People trained as experts in wildlife — such as marine biologists and conservationists — will teach your child all there is to know about Florida’s underwater plants and sea grasses, natural springs, coral reefs, and more. Children will learn that what we do in our daily lives impacts the world around us.
